We are currently recruiting children who stutter and children who do not stutter to evaluate attention, speech, language, and learning for in-person studies.

Studies for Children on the University of Pittsburgh Campus

We are currently recruiting children 7-12 years of age who do and do not stutter to evaluate the development of attention, language, and neural oscillations. Participation involves two sessions, which each take about 1 1/2 - 2 hours to complete.

Session 1 involves completing a series of short verbal and visual tests, such as computer games, and picture naming. This will be done online and does not involve visiting the lab.

Session 2 involves an in person visit to the lab. It involves recording your child's brain waves. Click here to view a short story about the process. During this session, your child will be sitting in a comfortable chair in our experiment room while watching a monitor and listening to sentences, words, and sounds. We will be recording your child’s brain activity with electrodes (small silver buttons or sensors) sewn into an elastic cap which fits on your child’s head like a swimming cap. We put a little gel (similar to hair gel) in each of the sensors in the cap to get a good connection. The procedure is entirely safe, painless, non-invasive, and involves no drugs of any kind.  You will be able to sit in the next room, watch your child on a monitor, and see your child’s brainwaves while they are being recorded.

Families receive monetary compensation for their participation.
